Debris you cannot see

Bare and worn concrete sheds continuously. In an aircraft environment that is not a housekeeping complaint, it is a risk item with your name on it.

Hydraulic fluid taking apart the wrong system

Phosphate ester fluids will destroy an unsuitable coating. Recoating a hangar deck means clearing the bay, and clearing the bay is the real cost of getting it wrong.

KF Aerospace has broken ground on a Hamilton expansion, and a multi-use and FBO facility broke ground in 2024. Around all of it sits the Airport Employment Growth District in Mount Hope. Hamilton has the oldest industrial building stock of the three. Bayfront and East Hamilton slabs are frequently mid-century, poured without a vapour retarder, finished with a shake-on hardener and carrying decades of oil and coolant. That is a prep problem before it is a coating problem. Red Hill, Ancaster and the airport lands are newer and far more straightforward.

Hangar work at Hamilton brings a scheduling reality that nothing else in this list does: the building has to be empty, the doors are enormous, and the weather gets a vote. A hangar deck cannot be coated with aircraft in it, and once the doors open for movements the temperature and humidity inside stop being controllable. That means hangar jobs get planned around aircraft movements and the season, not around our calendar, and the honest window for most of this work in southern Ontario is spring through autumn unless the building is genuinely heated and sealed.

Hydraulic fluid, verified not assumed

Skydrol and other phosphate ester hydraulic fluids will destroy the wrong coating. Manufacturers market hangar systems as Skydrol resistant, but that claim is usually marketing copy with no public immersion data attached. Before we specify anything for an MRO bay we require a written resistance statement from the manufacturer covering your actual fluids and dwell times. If they will not put it in writing, we do not use it.

Hangar drainage under NFPA 409

NFPA 409 classes hangars by door height and fire area, with Group I covering doors over 28 feet or fire areas over 40,000 square feet and Group II covering 5,001 to 40,000 square feet. It requires aprons adjacent to access doors to slope away from the hangar, a trench drain running parallel to the access doors to catch spilled fuel before it reaches the apron, and drainage sized so nothing builds up when every fire protection system and hose stream is discharging at design rate. Static control that is actually a system

A static dissipative floor is a grounded assembly: a conductive grid bonded through the coating, earth points installed with redundancy, and cabling specified by a qualified electrical engineer. Product data commonly puts a two to three millimetre system at foot traffic in 24 hours, heavy traffic at 48, and full cure at 7 days. We hand over resistance test results at completion.

Can a floor coating really help with FOD?

A seamless, coved, monolithic floor removes both sources. We would not claim a standard quantifies the contribution, because none does, but the mechanism is straightforward.
What does static control in a fuelling area actually require?
A grounded system, not a coating on its own. FAA guidance for fuelling areas sits above 1.0 x 10⁶ ohms and below 1.0 x 10⁹ ohms. That means a conductive grid bonded through the floor, multiple earth points for redundancy, cabling specified by a qualified electrical engineer, and resistance testing at handover.
Do you handle the hangar drainage detailing?
We detail the coating into it. NFPA 409 requires aprons to slope away from the hangar, a trench drain parallel to the access doors, and drainage capacity that holds up with all fire protection and hose streams discharging. We terminate into those trenches properly and rebuild throats where they have deteriorated.
Do you have experience with hangar drainage requirements?
We detail the coating into the drainage that NFPA 409 requires, which means terminating properly into the trench drain running parallel to the access doors, respecting the apron slope away from the hangar and rebuilding trench throats that have deteriorated. The drainage design itself belongs to your engineer, and we work to it rather than around it.
What about hydraulic fluid on an MRO floor?
That is the question we take most seriously in a hangar. Skydrol and other phosphate ester fluids destroy the wrong coating, and manufacturer marketing about Skydrol resistance frequently has no public immersion data behind it. We require a written resistance statement from the manufacturer covering your actual fluids and dwell times before we specify anything for your bays.
When can a hangar deck realistically be coated?
When the bay is empty, the doors can stay shut and the temperature and humidity can be held for the cure. In southern Ontario that usually means spring through autumn unless the hangar is properly heated and sealed. We plan around your movements schedule and the season, and we would rather push a date than pour into conditions that will not cure properly.
Can you actually meet our documentation requirements?
We provide manufacturer technical data sheets, the installation record including preparation method and build thickness, resistance test results where a static control system is installed, and the warranty document. What we will not provide is a certificate claiming the floor complies with a standard, because floors are not certified that way and your auditor will know it faster than we would.
We got a cheaper quote that says it is Skydrol resistant.
Then ask them for the manufacturer's written immersion data for your actual fluids and dwell times. In our experience that request is where those claims stop, because the phrase is usually marketing copy with nothing behind it. We ask for the same document before we specify anything, which is why we occasionally quote a more expensive system than the other bid.
How do we fit this around aircraft movements?
We plan around your schedule, not ours. The bay has to be empty and the doors have to stay shut for the cure, so we build the sequence with your operations team and accept that it will move. We would rather push a date than pour into conditions that will not cure properly.
