Hydraulic fluid, verified not assumed

Skydrol and other phosphate ester hydraulic fluids will destroy the wrong coating. Manufacturers market hangar systems as Skydrol resistant, but that claim is usually marketing copy with no public immersion data attached. Before we specify anything for an MRO bay we require a written resistance statement from the manufacturer covering your actual fluids and dwell times. If they will not put it in writing, we do not use it.

Hangar drainage under NFPA 409

NFPA 409 classes hangars by door height and fire area, with Group I covering doors over 28 feet or fire areas over 40,000 square feet and Group II covering 5,001 to 40,000 square feet. It requires aprons adjacent to access doors to slope away from the hangar, a trench drain running parallel to the access doors to catch spilled fuel before it reaches the apron, and drainage sized so nothing builds up when every fire protection system and hose stream is discharging at design rate. Static control that is actually a system

A static dissipative floor is a grounded assembly: a conductive grid bonded through the coating, earth points installed with redundancy, and cabling specified by a qualified electrical engineer. Product data commonly puts a two to three millimetre system at foot traffic in 24 hours, heavy traffic at 48, and full cure at 7 days. We hand over resistance test results at completion.

Can a floor coating really help with FOD?
Yes, mechanically. Bare and worn concrete dusts because the weak surface paste gets ground off by traffic, and tile or joint lines trap debris. A seamless, coved, monolithic floor removes both sources. We would not claim a standard quantifies the contribution, because none does, but the mechanism is straightforward.
What does static control in a fuelling area actually require?
A grounded system, not a coating on its own. FAA guidance for fuelling areas sits above 1.0 x 10⁶ ohms and below 1.0 x 10⁹ ohms. That means a conductive grid bonded through the floor, multiple earth points for redundancy, cabling specified by a qualified electrical engineer, and resistance testing at handover.
Do you handle the hangar drainage detailing?
We detail the coating into it. NFPA 409 requires aprons to slope away from the hangar, a trench drain parallel to the access doors, and drainage capacity that holds up with all fire protection and hose streams discharging. We terminate into those trenches properly and rebuild throats where they have deteriorated.
Do we need an aerospace-specific floor system?
Rarely, and be careful with anyone who tells you otherwise. What you actually need is a floor that matches your exposure: seamless and non-shedding for debris control, the right resistance chart for your fluids and cleaners, and a grounded static system if your process requires one. The word aerospace on a data sheet is not a specification.
Can you install without contaminating a running production area?
Yes. We hoard off the work area, run extraction, control dust from grinding at the source and schedule around your production windows. On sensitive jobs we stage the work so there is a clean handover boundary rather than a construction zone in the middle of your plant.
How do you keep grinding dust out of our machines?
Extraction at the tool rather than clean-up afterwards, hoarding around the work area, negative pressure where the neighbouring process warrants it, and an agreed handover boundary so it is clear who is responsible for what. It slows us down a little. In a shop with open machine ways and measurement equipment, that is the right trade.
Can you actually meet our documentation requirements?
We provide manufacturer technical data sheets, the installation record including preparation method and build thickness, resistance test results where a static control system is installed, and the warranty document. What we will not provide is a certificate claiming the floor complies with a standard, because floors are not certified that way and your auditor will know it faster than we would.
We got a cheaper quote that says it is Skydrol resistant.
Then ask them for the manufacturer's written immersion data for your actual fluids and dwell times. In our experience that request is where those claims stop, because the phrase is usually marketing copy with nothing behind it. We ask for the same document before we specify anything, which is why we occasionally quote a more expensive system than the other bid.
How do we fit this around aircraft movements?
We plan around your schedule, not ours. The bay has to be empty and the doors have to stay shut for the cure, so we build the sequence with your operations team and accept that it will move. We would rather push a date than pour into conditions that will not cure properly.
